Explore When And How To Use ChatGPT

ChatGPT has caused an almost seismic disruption in the tech industry, with far-reaching consequences across diverse professions and industries. One can see this AI chatbot's massive influence through its adoption figures. According to findings from a SimilarWeb study, ChatGPT has over 100 million monthly active users.

Apart from the enormous number of user accounts, what makes this adoption rate even more historic is that ChatGPT was launched just recently. The reason for its disruptive potential is not hard to find. Empowered by deep learning that leverages continuously updated and increasing amounts of data sets, this OpenAI chatbot has been trained to mimic human responses.

Think of all the sci-fi movies you have seen where an AI handles increasingly complex tasks, and you think to yourself, “Hey! Such technology is a long time coming!”, well this technology is here and will only keep improving from hereon.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a form of generative AI that generates text, images, audio and even synthetic data. The findings of an Allied Market Research study are illustrative of the rise in popularity of generative AI.

The study states that its market size will reach a mammoth $126.5 billion by 2031. While this is still an evolving technology and its primary use cases haven’t been clearly defined yet, it has already begun to make its impact felt in education, the software industry, marketing communications, customer services, engagement and more.

ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool; this tool is conversation based, meaning you interact with this tool as you would with a human. You ask the questions; it will provide the answers.

Benefits Of ChatGPT Cut Across Professions

There are two sides to every technology, the good and the bad. First, let’s talk about how ChatGPT has helped multiple professions in a good way.

ChatGPT is contributing to the customer services domain through a conversational AI-powered chatbot. Such chatbots can easily handle simple customer queries and even complaints, and complex questions and complaints are passed onto a human.

Customer Experience

This has taken an enormous load off the shoulders of customer service executives, and their time is not cannibalised by mundane and monotonous work. Instead, they can focus on improving customer engagement by delivering rich customer service experience, which can better customer retention rates. Also, the wait time to handle queries reduces, which enhances productivity and results in happy customers.

Content Research

Content creators are also having a grand time with ChatGPT. They are using this tool for ideation and even fleshing out ideas. Earlier, when content writers had to create content for a topic they had little or no idea about, they had to do their research and spend quite a bit of time doing so.

Now, with ChatGPT, they can get more clarity on the topic by just asking the chatbot. In addition, it gives them a good background on the subject, and a lot of contexts, enabling them to conduct even more focused research. More importantly, the time spent looking for content ideas has decreased appreciably, and creators can focus on writing or creating the piece content that is focus on the messaging.

When To Use ChatGPT:

When to use ChatGPT

  • If you are trying to create a large amount of content quickly, for different formats and different target personas, ChatGPT can accelerate ideation and content creation. It must be used when you want to increase productivity and meet demanding content creation and distribution deadlines.
  • Automating answers for general and oft-repeated queries in the customer services function is a good use of this tool. It will ensure rapid query resolution and will accelerate resolutions of complex customer queries.
  • ChatGPT must be used if you want to drive more efficiency in software development through accelerated coding, both frontend and backend. It can point developers to useful language libraries and provide examples of the code they need to write. This generative AI tool also helps write simple code, so developers can spend more time on the more complex code, ensuring error-free coding, faster coding, and minimize misconfigurations.
  • ChatGPT can also be used by researchers and analysts, who spend a lot of time gathering and organising data. With ChatGPT, they can cut down on the time taken to search for valid information and put it in a format that the reader quickly understands.

Increasing Dependency Due To ChatGPT

It’s human psychology. If a tool makes specific tasks easier for a person, the said person’s dependency on this tool will keep increasing. Professionals across domains have begun using ChatGPT to make their jobs easier and improve productivity.

We are looking at a scenario wherein copywriters use this tool to create simple ad copies, and writers who want to quickly search for ideas around a specific topic or write a simple SEO article have begun using ChatGPT extensively.

Another common user group of this tool is students who are leveraging this tool to create essays or to get guidance for school activities and projects. They can also use this tool to understand a topic or subject to aid their self-learning efforts.

There are many advantages and disadvantages with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. We have looked at the benefits, so let’s examine the problems.

What Are The Flaws Of ChatGPT?

As with any tool that wants to simplify your life, it is essential to exercise caution. Yes, ChatGPT makes your life easy, even mine, for that matter. But you cannot trust this tool blindly.

When Not To Use ChatGPT:

  • As a content creator using this bot, you ask for ideas and get ideas, but are those ideas perfect? Evaluating their worth and their applicability is significant. You can’t just run with those content ideas because an AI tool has offered them. More importantly, you must remember that the tool can respond to your questions as it has access to vast datasets, and the bias or inaccuracies in the data can be reflected in the content.
  • Educators are wary of students using ChatGPT. The whole point of giving exercises, essays, and projects for students to work on is to help them better understand a specific subject. As a student, if you depend on ChatGPT to write a unique essay, you might think it is unique because you have no idea about the topic in the first place. Still, your teacher will be able to immediately identify whether it was created by you or your “good friend,” the AI bot. This typically happens because the content can have re-used phrases, raising the plagiarism bogey. Also, educators are now wise to the fact that students depend on AI tools and therefore use AI detector tools to catch them in the act.
  • ChatGPT cannot be blindly used for coding. It can be error-ridden and verbose. Also, it lacks context awareness meaning it will come up with a code, provided the input is correct, but it might not be the best code for the particular scenario in which it will be used.

For those who think that ChatGPT is a panacea for many of their work-related challenges, it is important to take a step back and understand that its output and accuracy are entirely dependent on the training data used to train the model. If this data is inaccurate, outdated, or irrelevant, the output will be error-ridden and cannot be depended upon.

How Do You Use ChatGPT Effectively?

Think of ChatGPT as your assistant, nothing more, nothing less. It is essential to draw a line between what you can do with it and what you can’t. For example, if you are a developer tasked with writing code for software and choose to depend on ChatGPT for writing this code, you must validate and verify the code it generates for you. And, for this to happen, you need good coding skillsets. You cannot trust this tool blindly. It will make your job simpler, to an extent, but the output it delivers needs to be checked for quality.

Also, you will often find that the content it creates or the answers it offers are not up to the mark, meaning they are thin. So, you must flesh them out by digging deeper and asking the right questions. But even for that to happen, you will need a sound understanding of the subject and topic to make the most of ChatGPT.

When using ChatGPT, it is important to ask yourself,

  • What are the answers I need?
  • What do I want them for?
  • Is this answer enough?
  • Is this answer correct?
  • Do I need a better response?

and many more along these lines to get the right outcome!

Conclusion

ChatGPT is not an easy way out. Its use will help you perform time-taking tasks faster, so you can focus on the genuinely strategic tasks. However, this tool doesn’t give you the license not to learn essential skillsets and still fool people into thinking that you have these skillsets. You will still need to become an expert, you will still need to keep learning, and you will still need to put in the effort, all with a bit of help from ChatGPT.
